용사의 길

"위대한 전통을 지키는 용사들"에서 발췌된 글. 챈서 경의 말을 듣고 보니 한 단락이 유독 눈에 띈다.

다른 사람들에게서 칭송 받는 자는 그만큼 희생을 한다. 용사는 자신의 후원자를 제외한 누구보다도 높은 평가를 받지만, 여기에는 무거운 기대가 깃들어 있다. 자신이 보호하는 사람들의 희망, 고무시킨 사람들의 긍지, 그리고 리더의 요구가 이들의 어깨를 짓누르고 있다. 심지어 용사는 우군의 열망뿐만 아니라 적의 위험한 선망까지도 받는다.

용사의 승리에 관한 영광스러운 이야기는 종종 급작스러운 추락으로 치닫기 때문에, 반드시 전에 있었던 주목할 만한 인물들을 기억해야 한다. 그들은 밝게 타오르며, 다른 사람들을 그들의 영광 주위로 모여들게 만든다. 그러나 불을 다뤄 본 사람이라면 알 것이다. 불은 바람이나 주변 경관의 작은 변화만으로도 자신의 집까지 태워버리기 마련이라는 것을. 용사의 칭호를 갈망하는 자들은, 그들이 용사가 됨과 동시에 불분명한 수백 개의 칭호에 얽매이게 될 거라는 사실을 간과하곤 한다. 그들은 자신들이 영광 속에 영원히 안치될 소수에 해당한다고 생각한다. 그렇게 생각하지 않는다면, 감히 시도조차 할 수 없을 것이 분명하다.

From "Champions of Note in a Great Tradition." Lord Chancer's words make one passage stand out:

There is sacrifice in attaining the adulation of others, for while the Champion is raised above all but their patron, this is done with the weight of expectation. Their shoulders bear the hopes of those they protect, the pride of those they inspire, and the demands of those they lead. And in becoming such a figure, the Champion accepts not just the aspirations of his or her allies, but also the dangerous envy of the enemy.

One must remember the figures of note who have come before, for the glorious tales of their triumphs are often punctuated by steep and sudden tumbles. They burn bright, and draw others to their glory. But as anyone who knows of flames can attest, a simple shift of breeze or landscape can send the fire homeward. Those who seek the title never think themselves joining a hundred bound for obscurity. They know they are the rare few who will permanently be enshrined in glory. If they did not think as such, they would not be fit to try.
