스승님께서 보내 주신 쿠나리 표본들을 연구한 결과, 그들의 얼굴과 몸에 그려진 그림은 종교적 목적뿐만 아니라, 실용적인 이점도 지녔다는 걸 알아냈답니다. 아, 물론 그 문신의 색깔이나 모양에 뭔가 대단한 문화적 중요성도 있겠죠. 하지만 쿠나리들에게 목적 없는 행동이란 없잖아요. 그렇죠?

 

그들은 이 문신을 "비타르"라고 부릅니다. 그들의 언어로 "독 갑옷"이라는 뜻이죠. 이 문신이 마법을 띠고 있고, 착용자의 피부를 이전과 같이 유연하게 유지하면서도 쇠처럼 단단하게 만들어 주기 때문에 그렇게 부르는 듯합니다. 또한 분석 결과 물감에 다량의 독이 들어 있었어요. 독은 다른 물질과 섞여 있는데, 아마 쿠나리 피인 것 같습니다. 그게 독을 중화 시켜 주지만, 이 효과는 쿠나리의 육체에만 국한되어 있어요. 다른 종족은 즉시 사망하게 됩니다(마침 생각났는데, 몸종이 한 명 더 필요해졌어요). 중화 과정에서 독의 마력이 증폭되고, 이것이 보호 효과를 냅니다. 리륨 룬과 거의 같은 방식이에요.

After extensive study of the Qunari specimens you kindly provided, I've come to the conclusion that the painted markings on their face and body are not, in fact, solely for ceremonial purpose, but provide a practical benefit. Oh, I'm certain there is {i}some{/i} cultural significance to the patterns and colors they choose, but the Qunari do nothing without purpose, yes?

 

They call these markings "vitaar," which in their tongue means "poison armor." It's called this because the markings are magical in nature and actually harden their skin to an iron-like quality without hindering flexibility, and my analysis says the paint consists largely of poison. It's mixed with something else—blood, perhaps their own?—and that neutralizes the poison, but only for one with Qunari physiology. Anyone else would perish almost instantly (which reminds me: I'll kindly require another body slave). The process activates the magical qualities of the poison, which provides the protective effects, almost in the same manner that lyrium runes do.

 

How this works, and whether it can be used for our purposes, will require further study. Perhaps some live specimens this time?
