안드라스테는 누구였는가? 이 물음은 성녀의 죽음 이후 수 세기간 이어졌으며, 독실한 신자들조차 쉽게 답하지 못한다. 송가에서는 그가 지금의 페렐던 땅인 테빈터 제국의 변방에서 알라마리 부족 출신의 노예로 태어났으며, 창조주께서 계시를 내려 타락한 매지스터를 상대로 반란군을 이끌도록 했다고 한다. 과연 이것이 사실이겠는가, 아니면 일부 초기 안드라스테 신자들이 믿은 바와 같이 우호적인 영이 "계시"를 내린 것이겠는가? 우리는 안드라스테에 관한 전설이 그의 처형 직후 수년 사이 다양한 형태로 파급되었음을, 그리고 우리가 당연시하는 믿음은 다른 분파를 누르고 승리를 거둔 "일부" 분파로부터 비롯되었다는 것을 반드시 기억해야 한다. 실제로는, 한때 다양한 계파가 있었다는 의견을 제시하는 것마저도 직접적인 신성모독으로 간주했다... 그 진상이 모호해진 오늘날까지도. 우리가 확실하게 안다고 할 수 있는 것이라고는 안드라스테가 폭압적이고 혼란한 지배를 받는 세상을 고무시켰고, 전 테다스를 갈가리 찢어놓도록 한 전쟁을 촉발했다는 것뿐이다.

Who was Andraste? This question has lingered in the ages since her death, not as easily answered as the faithful assume. Born an Alamarri slave in the frontier realm of the Tevinter Imperium, now Ferelden, the Chant says she is the Bride of the Maker—that He told her in a vision of her role leading the rebellion against the corrupt magisters. Is it true, or, as some early Andrastian cults believed, did a friendly spirit bestow this "vision"? We must remember that legends of Andraste were multitude in the years immediately following her execution, and beliefs we take for granted belong to the "cult" victorious in suppressing all others. Indeed, even to suggest there was once disagreement was considered the direst heresy... until today, when we have lost even the memory of disagreement. All we know for certain is that Andraste inspired a world gripped by tyranny and chaos, that she helped spark a war which tore all of Thedas asunder.
